Warp 9

Warp 9 is a hip hop and electro-funk group that was formed in New York City in 1982. The group was founded by Lotti Golden and Richard Scher, who were both music industry veterans with experience in writing, producing, and recording music.

Warp 9’s music blended elements of hip hop, funk, and electronic dance music, making them a unique and influential group in the early days of hip hop. The group’s name was inspired by the concept of time travel, which was a recurring theme in their music.

Warp 9’s first single, “Nunk,” was released in 1982 and became an underground hit. The track was built around a sample of the bass line from the Chic song “Good Times,” and featured Lotti Golden rapping over a funky electronic beat.

In 1983, Warp 9 released their debut album, “It’s a Beat Wave,” which featured a mix of upbeat, danceable tracks and slower, more atmospheric songs. The album was well-received by critics and helped to establish Warp 9 as a unique and innovative group in the early days of hip hop.

Warp 9 went on to release several more albums in the 1980s, including “Fade In, Fade Out” (1983), “Warp 9: Master of the Mix” (1985), and “Second Wave” (1986). The group’s music continued to evolve, incorporating new sounds and styles from the rapidly changing electronic music scene.

Despite their influence and success, Warp 9 never achieved mainstream commercial success. However, their music was highly influential, and they were cited as an inspiration by many later hip hop and electronic dance music artists.

Today, Warp 9 is remembered as an important and innovative group in the history of hip hop and electronic dance music. Their music continues to be celebrated by fans and collectors of rare and obscure vinyl records.
